Thunderbolt Formation

Flying in formation with P-47D ‘Nellie B’

Last Friday (17th September 2021), we were privileged to catch a momentary glimpse of what Duxford would have felt like under its tenure as United States Army Air Force (USAAF) Station 357, as P-47 Thunderbolt ‘Nellie B’ accompanied our own P-51D Mustang ‘Miss Helen’ on an adventure above the clouds for one of our bespoke formation flight experiences.

Built in 1945, this particular Thunderbolt (serial number 45-49192) arrivied too late to see any combat service during the Second World War. Today, the aircraft’s paint scheme represents ‘Nellie B’, a Thunderbolt of the 492nd Fighter Squadron of the 48th Fighter Group (USAF), distinctive with its red checkerboard scheme and red nose band.

Huge Thanks to the team at Fighter Aviation Engineering Ltd, who were happy to help us make someone’s dream come true. We hope hope to have the opportunity to work with you guys again sometime soon.

If you would like to discuss your own formation experience, we love to hear new ideas and our team will certainly try it’s very best to build a flight package around your vision. Whether it’s a formation trip down to the White Cliffs, chasing our ‘Me109’ around the skies, or a formation sortie with one of your favourite Duxford residents, we’d be more than happy to discuss creating a bespoke package for you!
